Introducing Early Coding Experiences in the Foundation Department

By Krystyna Smolenski, head of Foundation Years

At our Foundation Department, we are excited to embark on a new learning journey of introducing preprogramming activities to our F3 and F4 students. Instead of diving straight into computer-based coding programs, we believe in providing hands-on, unplugged activities that foster foundational skills essential for future coding endeavors.

Coding, essentially, involves creating step-by-step instructions or algorithms that guide a machine to accomplish a specific task. Through activities such as directional word games, sequential tasks, and understanding grids, our students are honing crucial skills like spatial and number sense, problem-solving, reasoning, and communication.

These activities are not just about preparing children for future technological advancements; they are about developing critical thinking and logical reasoning from a young age. By engaging in concrete, bodily activities, children grasp coding concepts in a tangible manner before transitioning to virtual experiences.

Our aim is to build a solid foundation for our students, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and understanding before delving into more complex coding programs. With a focus on hands-on activities, we are nurturing young minds to become proficient problem solvers and effective communicators in the digital age.
