St Peter’s celebrates Home Language and Book Week to showcase linguistic diversity and love for reading

Last week, St Peter’s celebrated Home Language and Book Week, a joint event in honor of International Mother Language Day and World Book Day. The purpose was to celebrate the diversity of languages spoken by our students, as well as their passion for reading.

Students from Year 7 and Year 9 took charge of organizing a range of activities, which were enjoyed by students from Years 1 to 9. The activities included Cartoons in different languages, Quizzes, Game Shows, and an Escape Room. Additionally, as per tradition, a group of Year 7 students visited Foundation 4, 5, and Year 1 to read books to them in their mother tongues. This year, the languages chosen were Arabic, Russian, French, Chinese, Italian, and Catalan.

In addition to these activities, we held a competition for Year 1 to 9, which blended students’ artistic talents with their love for literature and language. The competition involved drawing with words and was inspired by the work of George Kowzan, an artist who spoke with Year 6 students during the week. (You can check out George’s art on Instagram)

At St Peter’s, we take pride in our diverse community, which is made up of more than 40 nationalities. Our Home Language and Book Week is just one of the ways in which we celebrate this diversity and showcase the unique languages and cultures that make up our school.
