At St PETER’S SCHOOL, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) supports students through an important stage of their development, from ages 11 to 16. As they grow, they become more independent, take greater responsibility for their learning and begin to develop their own interests and perspectives.
Learning in the MYP is inquiry-driven and concept-based. Through increasingly specialised subjects, students learn to ask meaningful questions, think critically, make connections and apply their knowledge to real-world situations and contexts.
The programme is organised into eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education while allowing students to develop increasingly deeper knowledge, skills and ways of thinking within each discipline.
We want students to understand what they learn and know what to do with that knowledge: to use it to solve problems, make informed decisions and better understand the world around them and their role within it.
The transition from the Primary Years Programme (PYP) to the Middle Years Programme (MYP) represents an important evolution in the way students learn.
In the PYP, inquiry is transdisciplinary: students explore broad questions and themes that connect different areas of learning. In the MYP, inquiry continues within increasingly specialised disciplines, allowing students to develop deeper knowledge and engage with the ways of thinking that characterise each subject. At the same time, they continue to make connections across subjects through interdisciplinary learning, bringing together different perspectives to explore complex questions.
As students progress through the MYP, they take greater responsibility for managing their time and learning. They learn to understand assessment criteria, reflect on their progress, organise themselves with greater autonomy and apply their knowledge increasingly independently. This progression gradually prepares them for the greater academic depth and specialisation of the IB Diploma Programme (DP).
This progression culminates in Year 10 with the Personal Project and the MYP eAssessment, two experiences that allow students to demonstrate how they apply their knowledge, connect ideas, think critically and use the skills they have developed throughout the programme.
The MYP therefore provides a strong bridge between the inquiry-based learning of the PYP and the academic independence, depth and specialisation students will encounter in the Diploma Programme.

At St PETER’S SCHOOL, students are placed in year groups according to their year of birth, using 31st December as the cut-off date. This means all children born in the same calendar year join the same year group.
This system ensures students learn alongside peers of the same age, although it may differ from other education systems, such as the British curriculum, which usually uses a 31st August cut-off date.
